ゼミ紹介

テーマ：ことばの科学：文の形と意味を考える
ことばは人間のみに備わる能力の１つだと考えられています。母語で発話をする際、無意識かつ瞬時に適切な文を作ることができるのは、この能力のおかげです。外国語として学んでいる言語と比較すると、その正確さや速さには大きな違いがあることがわかります。このような母語の文生成を可能にしている言語能力の奥深さに触れ、この能力がどのようなものかを一緒に考えていきたいと思っています。



メッセージ　

　私が言語に興味を持ったのは、中学で英語を学んだ時だったように思います。友人たちはあまり好きではなかった英文法が、私には数学の公式と同じように思えました。単語を代入すれば意味が生じること、そうやって作った文を理解してくれる人がいることに感動したことを覚えています。その後大学に入り統語論という分野と出会い、ヒトの文構造構築の仕組みについて深く学ぶようになりました。その後アメリカで大学院に行き、沢山の研究者に出会い、様々な考えに触れることで、言語学者として研究を仕事にしたいと思うようになり、今に至ります。
　学生の皆さんには、大学生活の中で「考える」ことの面白さ、難しさ、奥深さを是非感じてもらいたいと思っています。教科書をただ信じるのではなく、教科書を考える糸口にして、自由に思考できる力を身に付けてくれることを願っています。
I first became interested in language when I began learning English in junior high school. Unlike many of my friends, who didn’t enjoy studying it, I enjoyed learning grammar, which was for me more akin to solving mathematical formulas. I was fascinated by the idea of creating meaning by inserting words into those formulas, and by the fact that I could communicate with others through those sentences. Later, at university, I encountered the field of syntax and began to study in depth how humans construct sentence structures. After that, I went on to graduate school in the United States, where I met many researchers and was exposed to a wide range of ideas. Through those experiences, I decided to pursue research as a linguist.
I hope you will experience the fascination, the challenges, and the depth of thinking during your university life. Rather than simply accepting what is written in textbooks, I encourage you to use them as a starting point for deep thought and to develop the ability to think freely.
