[自己紹介]
はじめまして。英語英米文学科の教員で平田一郎と申します。言語学を専攻しています。言葉が好きです。大好きです。英語も言葉なので，もちろん英語も大好きです。母語は日本語なので，日本語も言うまでもなく大好きです。言葉には，日頃は気がつかない規則性があるし，何よりも神秘的で，美しいとさえいえます。誰だって，めくるめく言葉の世界に，そして言葉の研究に惹きつけられるはずです。２つの研究分野に今関心を抱いています。１つは英語と日本語の比較研究です。２つの言語を知れば知るほど，たくさんの類似点があることに驚きを覚えます。もう１つは口語英語です。口語英語は，単に「音のある英語」と思えるかもしれません。しかしそうではありません。口語の英語は，書き言葉とは独立した研究対象で，少し大げさに言えば，口語英語を知らずして英語の何たるかを知ることはできないといえます。本学科に入学して，すばらしき言葉の世界を旅してみませんか？

ゼミは２つの目標を持ってやっています。１つには，できるだけ多くの口語英語に触れること。もう１つは口語英語を言語学的に分析することです。具体的には，アメリカのシチュエーションコメディをうんとたくさん観て，興味深い言葉を拾い集めます。そして集めた資料を言語学の立場から説明します。１つ例を挙げてみましょう。何かを途中で投げ出してしまいそうな友達を励まそうとして，you are not a quitterと言うことがあります。直接"don't give up"と言ってしまわずに，まるで友達を客観的に描写しているように"you are not a quitter"というのです。どうしてでしょうか？"don't give up"のように命令してしまうと，言われた方は，自分の意思で選択する自由がなくなってしまいます。英語では，そのような言い方は失礼だと受けとられることがあります。そうならないように，自分のそうあってほしい願いを込めて"you are not a quitter"と言うのです。
[懇親会など]
年に２回位，懇親会を開き，学生同士の親睦と交流をはかっています。これに加え，集めた口語表現の練習会を開く予定です。便利な/面白い表現を自分なりに会話化して，理解を深めます。

Hi. I am Ichiro Hirata, a faculty member of this department. My major is linguistics. I love languages. I really do. I love English, of course, because English IS a language. My mother tongue is Japanese, and thus I love Japanese as well. Why not? Languages are beautiful, full of hidden rules and patterns, and above all mysteries. Who cannot help being attracted to the mesmerizing world of languages and study of languages? I am currently working on two specific research projects. The first one is a comparative study of Japanese and English. The deeper we understand the two languages, the more we know that they have MUCH in common. The other is concerned with colloquial English. You might think that spoken English is just a version of English that has sound. That is so not true. Spoken English is an independent category of research field. To exaggerate somewhat, you cannot appreciate what English is without knowing the way it is used in every day conversation. I sincerely invite you to join us and enjoy the magical, mysterious world of languages.
[Seminar] You are not a quitter!
The goal of my seminar is two-fold: watching English as much as possible, and analyzing what we watch in terms of linguistic concepts. Concretely we watch many many situation comedies in America (that's why I said "watching" not "listening to" English), and pick up interesting words, phrases, and sentences. We analyze them linguistically. Here is an example. To encourage your friend not to give up in the middle of something, you can say "you are not a quitter". This means that you are not someone who will easily quit something you started. Instead of directly telling her not to give up, you can just say "you are not a quitter" as an objective observation of what she is. Why? The reason is that an order like "Don't give up!" would deprive the addressee of her freedom of choices. This is sometimes taken as rude in English. To avoid this, you can say "you are not a quitter", implying that you hope she does not give up easily.
By the way, do you know what situation comedies are? They are TV shows like Full House, Friends, and Liv and Maddy. Why don't you join us and do linguistics?

I am now planning to have phrase exercise sessions where you come up with imaginary short conversations. The conversations are supposed to include the good expressions you pick up, and you can "feel" them. Won't that be fun, or what?

学生へのメッセージ
ゼミナールでは、洋書を講読しながら練習問題を積み重ねて、言葉の分析に対するカンを養っています。学生は担当の箇所の説明と、自分の研究テーマに関する発表をします。学生同士による、議論や問題点の指摘、質問なども重視しています。
最近痛感するのは「文字情報でしか伝え得ない大切な・ｱと」がある、ということです。自分のペースで立ち止まり、考えながら読み進めることで、はじめてわかる知識があるし、わかる気持ちがあるし、「本当はわかっていないわかったつもりのこと」があります。そのテレビを消して本を読みましょう。静かな「わかり」の時間が広がりますよ。
