Department of Japanese Language and Literature
In the Linguistics of Japanese Major, students learn about the historical studies of the Japanese language, sociolinguistics of the Japanese language, the research of corpus of Japanese language, computer linguistics of Japanese, and teaching methods of Japanese as a second language.
In the Japanese Literature and Culture Major, students do not just read and comprehend works of literature as in the old-style literary studies. The unique characteristic of this major is that students to also study the cultural background of literature as they read various works.
Department of English
The Department of English has three distinct courses designed to meet the specific needs of its students, and more clearly focus their studies in relation to their interests and future goals.
The purpose of the English Communication Course is to improve students' English communication skills. In order to realize this goal, the curriculum is designed so that English is not solely the target of learning but so that it is also a means of learning.
In the Language and Culture Course, students study the English language, and British and American culture. They examine English from a literary, linguistic and cultural viewpoint.
The defining characteristic of the Interdisciplinary Course is that it places minimal limitations on class selection so that students can choose classes more freely from other departments and other majors in the Schools of Literature. The curriculum is designed so that students can pursue their English-related studies in accordance with their own interests and goals.
Department of Humanities
The Philosophy Major is divided into two groups of subjects, namely, "Philosophy and Thoughts", which includes the study of logic, history of Western philosophy (ancient and medieval), German Philosophy, French Philosophy, British and American Philosophy, Japanese Thoughts, etc.; and "Cultural Science and Anthropology". Students can learn these subjects freely by combining them according to their individual interests.
The History Course encompasses a broad range of subjects in fields such as Japanese history, Oriental history, Western history and archeology. Students have a choice of selecting a single field of interest for in-depth research, or studying related aspects of each field in a cross-sectional fashion.
The earth's environment is changing drastically as a result of quickly growing human population, rapidly progressing urbanization and other factors. In the Major in Geography, students learn a wealth of knowledge and problem-solving methods while examining the current social situations and studying such subjects as everyday human life and the local and global environment.
Sociology is the study of human society. Everyone has a question or two about why people behave in particular ways. Sociologists approach the same question in a more scientific manner. Sociology is a discipline that attempts to understand the social causes and consequences of behavior. The Sociology major at Senshu is committed to empirical explorations of social structure and dynamics. It offers a wide variety of courses including urban sociology, labor sociology, social service, and communication studies.It provides rigorous training in the theory of sociology, and research methods in key sub-disciplines.
Department of Psychology
Psychology explores how the human mind operates by combining research perspectives of natural sciences and some of the traditions of the humanities and social sciences. Students in the Department of Psychology learn about various ways of understanding the human mind, keeping in close contact with a variety of related research fields and mastering research methodology, which is uniquely practiced in Psychology.
